With regards to the Oreto river park in Palermo, the Council of Palermo, the near Council of Altofonte and the Council of Monreale activated in 2004 a project for environmental regeneration. This project is focused on a Life Environment program named “Sun & Wind”. In this context, a research group of the University of Palermo, in collaboration with the three city councils, studied ecological, natural and cultural resources in order to improve the quality of life of inhabitants and tourists. Il fortuito ritrovamento al di sotto del terreno di riporto, di un antico ponte in muratura ancora perfettamente integro, ha sollecitato una ricerca sull’epoca e le tecniche di costruzione adottate. Attraverso l’analisi delle fonti antiche, della cartografia attuale e storica, delle cronache del tempo si è delineata la storia del sistema di attraversamento del fiume Oreto, l’espansione della città fino all’area del ponte, ritrovando quelle pratiche sociali che hanno fatto attribuire il nome non consueto. Abstract. The fortuitous discovery below the backfill, of an old still perfectly intact stone bridge, called us for a search on the age and construction techniques employed. Through the analysis of ancient sources, the historical current mapping, chronicles of the time, it has outlined the history of the river Oreto crossing system, the expansion of the city to the area of the bridge, finding those social practices that have made that peculiar name. The study also traced the building phases of the different structures that have taken place on the site, by the end of the sixteenth century, up to a few years ago. In the wake of the historical tradition of landscape architecture, the architect Gianni Pirrone (Palermo, 1924-2004) understood the need to look at urban greenery as a figure and not as a background, or frame of buildings and neighbourhoods. Pirrone consigns to an imminent future - a time that escapes our eyes today - the need for a new relationship between ecological reserves, gardens, residual areas and the city. The projects for the Botanical Garden and the Oreto Valley in Palermo and for the civic center of Gibellina Nuova solicit for a current reflection, making an interesting starting hypothesis.
